Near Eastern Old Syrian Popular Style Cylinder Seals Physical Characteristics

I have shared within previous posts, macro images that reveal the method and features of engraving. As well, have expressed the importance of breaking down internal toolmarks of the borehole as the most definitive piece of diagnostic evidence. For this blog entry the goals are to research so as to learn for my own education, share, and talk about with others the "physical characteristics of old Syrian popular style (OSPS)" cylinder seals. 

When I first became attracted to Near Eastern cylinder seals, it was the result of researching my Syrian ancestry. I have some experience with other types of antiques and the one thing I learned quickly was not to try and learn about every single medium within a group. It is best to choose a specific niche category within the group to begin with. So, from this point forward I am going to do the same with these Near Eastern cylinder seals and concentrate initially and specifically on a niche group known as the "Old Syrian Popular Style" cylinder seals. What better way to feel a sense of connectiveness to my ancient Syrian ancestry! 

Important areas to cover include the properties of material (mineral, stone or clay), dimensions and shape. 

This blog entry will cover the materials 

One of the main characteristics of the old Syrian popular style seals is that they are predominantly chlorite or talc (soapstone) and not more precious and harder materials such as hematite, which was the main mineral for the better-quality contemporary seals. Barbara Porter notes the stone type of all the Marcopoli seals which have since been shown to be chlorite were considered to be serpentine. It was peculiar that no seal within the Marcopoli collection was identified as chlorite even though it had become a popular material in the late third millennium as noted by Dominique Collon. So, the information presented follows her research of the British Museum collection. 

Chlorite, serpentine and talc/soapstone are of soft to medium harness and with varied colors like brown, black and green. The relative hardness on Mohs scale for these is approximately 2-3 for chlorite, 3-4 for serpentine, 2-3 for talc rock (soapstone), pure talc being 1 as compared to hematite at 5-6.5. The softness of the stone surely contributes to the very worn condition of so many of these seals. The characteristic wear patterns of the soft, chlorite seals are rounded edges and flattened, indistinct engravings. 

When steatite and chlorite are fired, either accidentally or deliberately, the hardness increases to approximately Mohs 6-7.

Interestingly this 2nd Millenium Old Style Popular Style seal is carved from faience, a rarely discussed or attributed Near Eastern Cylinder seal material with a correct specific gravity of 1.66.

The Diagnostic Properties of Faience vs Stone 

If this particular seal were instead carved from a natural stone common to the Old Syrian Popular Style (such as chlorite, steatite, or calcite), the specific gravity would be dramatically different:


For explicit discussions of Old Syrian Popular Style seals made of faience we need to look into broader Near Eastern glyptic surveys, and specialized archeological site reports.

1. Dominique Collon - First Impressions: Cylinder Seals in the Ancient Near East 

In her chapters tracking the Bronze Age Levant and Syria, she notes that while hard stones (like hematite) were reserved for elite, high-quality "Classic Syrian" seals, cheaper mass-produced seals—specifically those cut in the linear, deeply drilled "Popular Style" were heavily manufactured using soft materials like faience, glazed limestone, and soft steatite to meet the commercial demands of the general public. 

2. Beatrice Teissier - Ancient Near Eastern Cylinder Seals from the Marcopoli Collection

In Teissier's analytical publication of the collection, she includes a dedicated category for Middle-to-Late Bronze Age Syrian Popular Style seals. In her material descriptions for these specific geometric and simple animal-motif seals, multiple examples are explicitly cataloged as faience or "glazed composition," detailing how the original-colored glaze layer has completely eroded away over centuries of burial.

3. Excavation Reports from Alalakh (Tell Atchana) and Ugarit (Ras Shamra)

Sir Leonard Woolley's excavation reports for Alalkh: Woolley uncovered hundreds of local Syrian seals from Levels VII through IV (the exact 2nd-millennium timeframe). He specifically notes that the crude, linear style seals (which we now universally categorize under Porter's "Old Syrian Popular Style" umbrella) were overwhelmingly made of faience and soft synthetic pastes, rather than premium imported stones.

When reading older archaeological texts or specific collection indices, you may not always see the exact word "faience". Authors frequently substituted it with alternative terms such as, glazed composition - vitreous paste, sintered quartz, and frit, though technically frit is unglazed, it is often jumbled in older texts. 

Another material is baked and unbaked clay which had the advantage of being disposable and may have been the Syrian equivalent of Mesopotamian burgul seals, which were made of cheap materials as needed and then thrown away.

Because ancient workshops themselves rarely survive intact, scholars treat the seals like forensic evidence. By analyzing carving traits under high magnification, researchers have mapped distinct "school signatures" across Mesopotamia.

Pioneering tool mark forensic analysis research utilizing scanning electron microscopes (SEM) and Extended Depth of Field (EDF) technology has mapped the exact kinetic behavior of ancient Near Eastern cylinder seal tools. Another great study is, "Ancient Lapidary, A Study Using Scanning Electron Microscopy and Functional Analysis" Studies show that the attack angle of specific workshops consistently held their gravers at exact 35-degree angles for curved lines by way of an oblique attack technique.

Drill consistency variations show how micro-concentric circles were dragged across the stone reveal whether a workshop favored a free-hand bow drill or a rigid, h-shaped mechanical compass. The internal borehole striation lines left behind inside the bore hole often act as a fingerprint for the mass-producer of the initial stone blanks. 

Methodological trait tracking (the aesthetics) was researched by experts like Edith Porada and Dominique Collon. who established deep catalogs analyzing how figures were constructed stylistically. When seals from different areas share highly specific idiosyncratic rendering choices, they are pinned to the same Near Eastern cylinder seal workshop. Scholars trace anatomical formulas that show how different ships constructed human or divine faces. One workshop might consistently construct eyes using two drill dots an a horizontal slash, while a rival shop carved almond shaped outlines with a delicate chisel. 

Cutting sequence research by glyptic experts (such as Senta Green and Robert Jamison) proved that ancient Near Eastern cylinder artisans carved complex scenes following rigid, step by step sequences. Identifying the exact order in which a master carver layered the background, figures, and clothing helps researchers differentiate between an original workshop piece and a later imitation or recurved seal.

The "Mitannian "common style" case study is one of the most profound examples of cross shop stylistic research center on the Mitannian Empire which ruled Northern Mesopotamia. These shops utilized highly specific, standardized formula, using massive mechanical drill heads to rapidly punch out uniform patterns of stylized animals, sacred trees, and seated figures. By analyzing the exact proportions and spacing of these drill marks, researchers can map out exactly which regional capitals were trading with one another, proving that multiple distinct ancient Near Easter Cylinder Seal shops were trained in the exact same municipal carving style.

As a new collector with extensive lapidary experience, researching the authenticity of Near Eastern cylinder seals led me to focus on the type of stone, tools and method of engraving by way of micro-features used for both the motif and drill hole. Combined with iconographic details within the motif itself that include type of clothing, headgear, hairstyle, shape of figures, astronomical features, and the possible archaizing of previous millennia. 

The archaizing from previous millennia is proving to be especially difficult. Although some motifs survived, they were heavily modified, replaced, or entirely fell out of style as empires shifted.

The contest scene evolved into hero vs. monster, the banquet scene largely disappeared, the presentation scene remained but transformed, mythological narratives were replaced by astral and divine symbols, and cultic rituals and temple processions were replaced by royal hunts.

For this blog entry, would like to concentrate on 3rd millennium banquet scenes and it having been replaced with a simplified libation or ritual offering scene during the 1st millennium with archaizing from the 3rd millennium. 

Again, I am very new to these little gems of ancient Near Eastern history, so this kind of research enables me too continually learn and hopefully, correctly help others as well. I am going to use for comparison a recently acquired authentic 1st millennium seal depicting a ritual scene

Everything within this specific motif is entirely acceptable and consistent with an authentic 1st millennium BCE archaizing seal. In ancient Mesopotamia, blending Iron Age execution with Bronze Age imagery was a deliberate political and religious strategy to project ancestral legitimacy. Artisans routinely copied ancient style to evoke deep sanctity. The aura of Authority using old Sumerian symbols validated the contemporary ruler's cosmic right to rule. The mixing of eras was intentional, not an accidental pastiche or modern mistake.

1st millennium markers, imperial standards like the presence of the Marru (Spade of Marduk) is an absolute hallmark of late Babylonian authority. The astral canopy with the winged solar disk and simplified six-ray Star of Ishtar are textbook Neo-Assyrian iconographies. Elite furniture like the backless folding camp stool represents 1st-millennium military and admirative command seats. The ancient 3rd-millennium tiered kaunakes garment adds immediate historical gravity. Reintroducing the obsolete Sumerian drinking tube anchors the scene in archaic sacred banquet theology.

Now, let's do a comparison to a forgery with several iconographic red flags. There are many similar incoherent fake variations of this scene being sold on eBay, Etsy and even popular auction houses. This is just one example that illustrates how modern copyists misinterpret ancient religious symbols, creating a textbook pastiche, many of which apply for any number of Near Eastern cylinder seals.

The first error is at the cross-legged table. A loop starts under the bird, drops down, curves sharply under the table, and then bends back upward like a modern garden hose or snake tail. Through incoherence the artisan tried to copy the archaized "beer straw" concept from a 3rd millennium banquet but did not understand its mechanics. In authentic seals, a straw is a straight, functional diagonal line running from vessel directly upwards towards a figure. Here, it is floating, strangely curved, it completely fails the functional logic of ancient banquet art.

The unprecedented incoherent error for the bird on a table. In first millennium, ritual scenes, these tables hold specific ritual offerings, such as representation for loaves of bread, a ritual vessel or fish. While birds do appear in Mesopotamian art, placing a giant, perching bird directly on a sacred ritual offering table as an independent worship object is an iconographic anomaly. 

The forger confuses 1st millennium with 3rd millennium dress. He misinterprets the seated figure wearing a cross hatched bodice paired with a striped lower skirt, while the standing figure wears a simple belted kilt with vertical fringes at the bottom. 

The forger is also attempting to mimic a tiered Sumerian Kaunakes but executes it poorly. Authentic archaizing seals show clean, intentional layers resembling shingles. Here, the grid pattern on the torso completely clashes with the striped skirt, showing no understanding of traditional textile structures. Furthermore, the standing worshiper's short kilt is highly reminiscent of a generic Levant/Syrian style, which mismatches the highly specific Mesopotamian setting. 

The anatomical impossible posture of the standing worshiper's arms on the right. Both arms originate from the same side of the body, and the hands are cupped awkwardly toward the face. Meanwhile, the seated figure has a massive, oversized eye dominating the side of the head. While the eye itself is structurally and historically acceptable, the actual anatomical breakdown and carving posture of the rest of the head and upper body point toward a modern copyist. If we look past the eye to how the facial profile is constructed, the anomalies become much clearer.

Ancient Near Eastern artists adhered to a very strict, elegant canon of proportions. Even when stylized, the arms and hands of worshipers in Neo-Assyrian or Neo-Babylonian art are carved with precise, dignified gestures of reverence. The haphazard, disjointed arm placement seen here is a classic signature of a modern carver working quickly without formal training in ancient artistic canons.


Notice the "stacked" facial profiles. In authentic Mesopotamian glyptic art, even in highly abstracted or drilled styles, the profile of the brow, nose and lips flows in a continuous elegant line or is formed by fluid, overlapping wheel cuts. On this seal, the nose and jaw look like small, independent blocks or rectangular nodules stamped directly onto the front of the face, completely breaking the organic profile of ancient portraiture.

The detached neck-to-body connection shows the head of the seated figure is floating on a thin, rigid column that connects awkwardly to the torso at an unnatural right angle. Genuine Iron Age or Bronze Age artisans carved the neck as a strong, tapered transition leading into the shoulders, ensuring the figure looked anchored and dignified rather than top heavy. 

The linear, drilled out astronomy error for the astral symbol at the top consists of a central drill hole with thick, perfectly straight tubes ending in small ball radiating outwards. As a result of the carver's incoherence, he attempts a "drill style" starburst, but lacks the subtle tapering, manual wheel entry marks, and hand guided flow found on authentic pieces. It looks exactly like the product of a modern mechanized rotary tool or a modern casting of a poorly carved modern mold. With this fake seal, the lines of the starburst have a fixed, identical channel width from the center all the way to the tip. This happens because modern computerized or motorized diamond-edge wheels maintain a rigid, unyielding spin that plows through stone at a perfectly consistent thickness. 

Looking closely at the ends of the ray on the authentic seal motif, they naturally taper or "feather" out into a soft point where the wheel lifted away. Ancient copper or iron cutting discs were hand forged and word down irregularly. As the artisan pushed the hand powered blade into the stone, it wobbled microscopically, making the center of the cut slightly wider or deeper than the shallow, tapered exit points. Undercuts and overcuts (the mechanical footprint) on the fake seal shows the lines stop abruptly, creating neat, squared off terminal ends. Modern electric tools stop exactly where the carver lifts the handpiece. The authentic seal example used hand powered cutting wheels (which were much larger in diameter than modern miniature Dremel bits) that leave a distinct "over cut" or shadow tail. Because the edge of an ancient circular wheel is curved, it hits the surface of the stone before the deepest center point of the blade can make contact. This leaves faint, shallow entry and exit tracks extending just past the main bod of the star ray.

Northern Syria / Levant "Old Syrian Popular Style (OSPS)", (1800-1300 BCE) Near Eastern Cylinder Seal



This 1 1/16" cylinder seal shows a stylized, deeply carved animal figure, most likely a horned quadruped (such as an ibex, gazelle, or wild goat).

Interestingly, this seal is carved from a rarely discussed or attributed material called, "faience" with a correct specific gravity of 1.66. The carver used a "drill-and-gouge engraving technique" that displays distinct, deep linear grooves paired with stylized hatch marks along the curved ridge. This indicates the widespread use of a hand-graver or a simple bow-drill setup to quickly hollow out the shapes. The carver blocked out the composition by drilling the deep round anchor points first and then used a hand-graver or cutting wheel to slash in the straight lines connecting them to form the limbs. The style of the animal with serrated hatching "initially seemed to align" with Jemdet Nasr or Early Dynastic I-II periods (circa 3100–2700 BCE).

Breaking down the internal toolmarks of the bore hole is the single most definitive piece of diagnostic evidence. It provides textbook physical proof of ancient lapidary manufacturing. Here, the concentric ridges of interior wall for the bore hole clearly shows fine, regular spiral or concentric scoring marks that indicate the use of a mechanical rotary tool. Specifically, a bow-drill or pump-drill along with a hard abrasive slurry such as quartz sand or emery. Looking through the drilled hole from both ends, the center is narrower where the two drilled ends meet and is offset. The outer rim shows subtle smoothing and light chipping, consistent with friction from being worn on a cord or maybe metal pin.

The standing Deity holding a down-turned sickle-sword in his right hand. The kneeling figure, rather than being a passive observer kneels facing left with a stylized tassel hanging from the elbow struts a standard Syrian or Old Babylonian skullcap. The kneeling figure shows a stylized rendering of a feathered headdress or a tiered crown. In provincial North Syrian and Levantine art, minor gods or divine guardians were frequently depicted with spike-like feathers or short horns radiating from their heads to show their supernatural status.

The quadruped appears to serve as a dynamic looping bridge between characters. The standing deity appears to be pursuing, confronting, or dominating the beast from behind, while the animal flees toward the kneeling figure.

The cluster of five deeply drilled dots forms a cross or rosette shape above the kneeling figure. A common ancient Near Eastern symbol representing an astral deity or constellation, often associated with the Pleiades or the star of Ishtar.

There are three short marks between the legs of the kneeling figure that represent space-fillers or highly simplified dress folds. Ancient seal carvers had an aversion to empty space. If a composition left a blank gap, it ruined the continuous flow of the clay rollout. When a character kneels, their long tunic bunching up between their thighs and creates folds. In this provincial style, the carver slashed three parallel dashes into that empty gap to suggest the pleated fabric of the kilt or robe. A similar mark between the waist and left arm likely represent a tassel or decorative cord.

I found the kneeling figure especially interesting because am only able to find a few cylinder seal examples. The first ones point to Early Dynastic ll from within the Yale Babylonian collection (264 and 265). I did also find a couple of examples within Collon's "Cylinder Seals of the Ancient Near East" that show similar kneeling figures described as Old Babylonian style that flourished in North Syria. The human figures relate this North Syrian group to seals from a workshop or group of workshops whose products are found over a wide area. From what I am able to find it seems the motif of a kneeling figure is a bit rare on these cylinder seals.

While kneeling figures appear in Early Dynastic II contest scenes as active combatants, the specific execution of the kneeling posture on this seal finds its closest parallels in the North Syrian/Mitannian glyptic groups categorized by Dominique Collon (such as Nos. 210 and 211). These provincial 2nd-millennium BCE workshops utilized an identical technical signature—combining deeply gouged linear tracks for limbs with mechanical drill points and frequently utilized kneeling figures in non-combat, ritualistic or presentation contexts.

Stylistic and Comparative Analysis:

Northern Syria Group: A definitive chronological and geographic attribution for the cylinder seal is compared against documented parallels from the 2nd millennium BCE Levantine and North Syrian glyptic traditions. While the iconographic motif of a kneeling figure finds its formal roots in the wrestling contest scenes of the Mesopotamian Early Dynastic II period, both the technical execution and specific narrative markers of the subject seal diverge sharply from Early Dynastic conventions. The closest visual and mechanical parallels are found within the "North Syrian Group" or Mitannian Common Style (circa 1800–1300 BCE) documented by Dominique Collon (Cylinder Seals of the Ancient Near East). A critical comparison between the subject seal and Collon’s Catalog No. 210 isolates the precise stylistic nuances of this provincial workshop circle.

Ultimately, the data demonstrates that this seal is not a product of mainstream, metropolitan Southern Mesopotamian workshops, but rather belongs to a highly specialized provincial workshop flourishing along the trade routes of Northern Syria and the Levant. While these 2nd-millennium BCE artisans frequently revived "archaizing" themes from the 3rd millennium, such as rampant quadrupeds and kneeling profiles, they adapted them to fit contemporary production demands. This seal replaces the dynamic, fluid muscular modeling of Early Dynastic art with highly efficient, geometric slashes and deep, mechanical ball-drill points. When paired with the presence of the down-turned sickle-sword, a weapon that is entirely absent from the Early Dynastic corpus, a Middle-to-Late Bronze Age North Syrian attribution (c. 1800–1300 BCE) can be asserted with confidence.

The two figures wear traditional tiered garments and headdresses. The seated figure is dressed in a classic Sumerian kaunakes, featuring distinct rows that resemble layered feathers or shingles, the definitive dress of Sumerian royalty and deities during the Early Dynastic period. In contrast, the row of dots decorating the back of the standing figure's head and running down his spine represents the elaborate components of royal or priestly regalia. The royal hair ribbon or diadem is represented by the dots directly behind the head, depicting a heavy, beaded headband or the decorative, knobby knot of a wrapped royal diadem (agû). Additionally, the dots streaming down his back represent a counterweight tassel or decorative cord (kutpānu). Royal necklaces and heavy breastplates worn by Assyrian kings and priests were so massive that they required a heavy, multi-stranded beaded cord trailing down the spine to balance the weight on the chest and keep the jewelry perfectly centered. In this sacred arrangement, the seated figure extends an open hand in a gesture of greeting, blessing, or prayer toward the center of the scene, while the standing figure raises his hand in reverence, reaching toward the floating celestial symbols.

A cross-legged table altar sits between the figures alongside a tall, standing ceramic storage vessel, from which a diagonal line extends upward to represent a drinking tube or straw. While the overall artistic style of this seal—characterized by linear cutting, the date palm, and specific cosmic symbols, points to the Neo-Assyrian or Neo-Babylonian period (1st millennium BCE), the beer straw motif is a classic hallmark of much older Sumerian banquet scenes (Early Dynastic III, c. 2600–2350 BCE). By the later Iron Age, this specific straw-drinking method had largely been phased out of royal life in favor of shallow metal bowls and goblets. Its combination here with a 1st-millennium aesthetic indicates that the artisan was intentionally channeling an archaizing style, deliberately incorporating traditional Sumerian religious themes to invest the seal with an aura of ancient sanctity and deep ritual authority.

The backless construction of the chairs is a critical iconographic detail. In Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian art, this elite furniture is known as a camp stool or folding stool. While modern eyes might view a backless stool as simple, in the ancient Near East it was a seat of high administrative and religious authority, occupied by kings, high priests, and deities during formal audiences, strategic military campaigns, or sacred banquets.

To emphasize the structural integrity of the table altar, the artisan selected a larger ball-drill bit to carve the central pivot pin where the legs intersect. In royal palaces, this central pin was frequently capped with an ornamental metal medallion or rosette, perfectly captured by the large, raised circle on the rollout impression. Draped over the top of the altar is a heavy, woven ritual cloth adorned with decorative tassels (qastū). The hanging vertical strings with terminal dots are stylized representations of knotted fringe tassels or weighted beads woven directly into the fabric's edges. The carver used a thin, wheel-cut line to draw the hanging strands, finishing each with a swift punch of the ball-drill to create the round, beaded tips. Finally, the three parallel lines stretching down the upper right leg represent stylized fluting, carved wood grain, or structural ribbing. By placing these lines only on the upper portion of the leg, the artisan masterfully captured the angle where light naturally shifts across the table's frame, adding a subtle sense of dimensional depth to an otherwise flat, linear composition.

Floating directly behind the head of the seated figure is a stylized divine standard, specifically representing the Marru, the sacred spade or triangular hoe of Marduk, the chief national deity of Babylon. The central vertical spike depicts the pointed blade of the implement, while the two distinct, upward-curving horns flanking its base represent the protective crossbeams or side-guards. In Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian glyptic traditions, these side elements were routinely stylized into this symmetrical, fork-like configuration. The short stalk at the bottom indicates the socket where the object would be affixed to a long ceremonial wooden staff or pedestal. Just as the six-sided star identifies the celestial presence of Ishtar, this spade stamps the authority of Marduk directly onto the left side of the composition. Formally classified as a "Floating Marru (Spade of Marduk) Standard," this iconographic inclusion ensures the seated figure is literally enveloped by the defensive symbols of the empire's greatest cosmic protectors.

Floating above the ritual scene are powerful celestial markers. The composition features a crescent moon, the symbol of the moon god Sin, alongside a large winged solar disk representing either the sun god Shamash (the deity of justice and truth) or the supreme national divinity, Ashur. The central disk of this standard consists of a rounded, drilled dot that represents the sun itself. The rectangular bars extending to the left and right depict the spread wings of a divine raptor—typically a falcon or eagle—with finely carved horizontal lines denoting individual flight feathers. Angled lines flaring downward from the center mimic the bird's tail feathers or, alternately, streaming rays of divine light projecting onto the ritual scene below. Embedded within the sun star is an ancient motif known as the Four-Pointed Star Disk. Its incised cross creates four distinct axes representing the sun's rays reaching the four corners of the earth (kibrat erbetti), broadcasting the message that Shamash’s divine justice rules universally. Furthermore, these cross-arms mark the year's four critical astronomical parameters: the two solstices and the two equinoxes.
